Course Overview

​

The Certificate IV in Public Safety (Firefighting Supervision) course is designed for firefighting professionals who lead firefighting teams. This will include the coordination of resources and the supervision of personnel at an incident.

​

The role of a firefighter at this level is to manage incidents, protect lives and prevent the destruction of property and the environment. To prevent incidents from occurring and to improve community safety a firefighter’s duties may include conducting community education programs about fire and community safety and undertaking fire inspections of locations to verify adherence to local fire regulations.

 

This qualification includes the units of competency required by firefighters to control an incident and to perform a range of related activities. It typically involves some discretion in selecting equipment, services and contingency measures.

Course Structure

To receive this qualification you must successfully complete this course, you must satisfactorily complete all course assessment requirements.

 

11 units, 3 core and 8 electives.

Duration

​

The expected completion time is 12 months from enrolment date. 

​

This time period is inclusive of all teaching, learning and assessment activities required to achieve course outcomes.  It should be noted that there is considerable flexibility in the time allocated for course completion, such flexibility acknowledges that individual students may require less or more time to achieve course outcomes.

Pre-requisites

 

There are no formal pre-requisites required for entry into this qualification, However a number of units has pre-requisites which require completion prior to commencing the unit, including -

​

• PUAOPE012 Control a Level 1 incident, requires completion of one of the following;

  • PUAFIR302 Suppress urban fire

  • PUAFIR303 Suppress wildfire.

• PUATEA003 Lead, manage and develop teams, requires completion of PUATEA002 Work autonomously 

• PUAFIR406 Develop simple prescribed burn plans, requires completion of PUAFIR303 Suppress wildfire 

• PUAOPE016 Manage a multi-team sector, requires completion of one of the following; 

  • PUAFIR302 Suppress urban fire ​

  • PUAFIR303 Suppress wildfire

RTO Entry Requirements

 

Students must satisfactorily complete a language, numeracy and literacy assessment prior to or on course commencement to assess capacity to meet the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the course.

​

Students will also need to have the physical capacity to undertake the practical components of this course.

​

Delivery

Delivery modes include eLearning, classroom lead training sessions and written assessments.

​

Training

 

The course is facilitated by a highly experienced training team, and includes trainer presentations, small group work, and lots of opportunity for practical hands on activities.

​

Assessment

 

A range of assessment methods are used to monitor student progress and assess competence. Knowledge checks and practical skill demonstrations are used across all units, some units also require written activities to be completed.  Throughout the course trainers are available to assist and support students in their learning journey and in the completion of assessment requirements.

Employment Outcomes

​

Students who are successful in gaining this qualification can expect to be eligible for jobs in the emergency response sector within the mining and resources industry.

Please note certification will not be issued until all course fees have been paid.

All students need to have a USI to be able to enrol onto this course.  The USI is available online at no cost and will stay with you for life.
