Course Overview

​

The Certificate III in Public Safety (Firefighting and Emergency Operation) course is designed for experienced firefighting and emergency response professionals who respond to disasters and/or incidents that endanger life, property and the environment.

​

The role of a firefighter is to suppresses and extinguish fires, undertake rescues, respond to hazardous materials incidents, protect lives and to prevent the destruction of property and the environment. At this level, firefighters are expected to make informed, timely and confident decisions working as a member of a firefighting team under limited supervision.

​

To prevent fires from starting and to improve community safety a firefighter's duties may include conducting community education programs about fire safety and undertaking fire inspections of locations to verify adherence to local fire regulations.

​

This qualification includes the units of competency required by firefighters to suppress urban fires and respond to hazardous materials and to perform a range of other related activities. It typically involves some discretion in selecting equipment and determining tactics.

Course Structure

To receive this qualification you must successfully complete this course, you must satisfactorily complete all course assessment requirements.

Duration

​

The expected completion time is 12 months from enrolment date. 

​

This time period is inclusive of all teaching, learning and assessment activities required to achieve course outcomes.  It should be noted that there is considerable flexibility in the time allocated for course completion, such flexibility acknowledges that individual students may require less or more time to achieve course outcomes.

Pre-requisites

 

There are no formal pre-requisites required for entry into this qualification, However a number of units has pre-requisites which require completion prior to commencing the unit, including -

​

• PUAFIR302 Suppress urban fire, requires completion of HLTAID003 Provide first aid and PUAFIR203 Respond to urban fire.

• PUAFIR308 Employ personal protection at a hazardous materials incident requires completion of PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit.

• PUAFIR309 Operate pumps requires completion of PUAEQU001 Prepare, maintain and test response equipment and one of the following 

  • PUAFIR203 Respond to urban fire ​

  • PUAFIR220 Respond to isolated structure fire

  • PUAFIR204 Respond to wildfire 

  • PUAFIR205 Respond to aviation incidents (specialist)​.

• PUAFIR324 Render hazardous materials incident safe requires completion of PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit. 

• PUAWHS002 Maintain safety at an incident scene requires completion of PUAFIR210 Prevent injury. 

• PUAFIR306 Identify, detect and monitor hazardous materials  at an incident requires completion of PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit. 

• PUASAR024 Undertake road crash rescue requires completion of HLTAID003 Provide first aid and PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation 

• PUASAR025 Undertake confined space rescue requires completion of PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation and PUAFIR306 Identify, detect and monitor hazardous materials at an incident. 

• PUASAR032 Undertake vertical rescue requires completion of PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation.

RTO Entry Requirements

 

Students must satisfactorily complete a language, numeracy and literacy assessment prior to or on course commencement to assess capacity to meet the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the course.

​

Students will also need to have the physical capacity to undertake the practical components of this course.

​

Delivery

Delivery modes include classroom lead training sessions and written assessments.

​

Training

 

The course is facilitated by a highly experienced training team, and includes trainer presentations, small group work, and lots of opportunity for practical hands on activities.

​

Assessment

 

A range of assessment methods are used to monitor student progress and assess competence. Knowledge checks and practical skill demonstrations are used across all units, some units also require written activities to be completed.  Throughout the course trainers are available to assist and support students in their learning journey and in the completion of assessment requirements.

Employment Outcomes

​

Students who are successful in gaining this qualification can expect to be eligible for jobs in the emergency response sector within the mining and resources industry.
